Every Friday at 11 it's time for sports hour at Björn Borg and today we're doing boxing.

Learn different boxing terms, punches & combinations and join us to see how it looks during one of our training sessions.

Different forms of boxing

There are different types of boxing. Here are some different training forms of boxing:

  • Professional boxing - regulated matches with paid boxers.

  • Amateur boxing - regulated matches for non-professional boxers.

  • Kickboxing - combines boxing with kicks and knees.

  • Muay Thai - Thai martial art involving kicks, knees, sweeping, elbows, and clinching.

  • Boxercise - training inspired by boxing without sparring or contact with opponents.

  • Boxing for fitness - training using boxing exercises to burn calories and improve fitness.

Uppercut

Uppercut

When performing an uppercut in boxing, it is important to consider the following:

  1. Positioning: Stand with your feet in a stable boxing stance, with one foot in front of the other and knees slightly bent.

  2. Movement: Prepare the movement by bending your knees and rotating your hips and shoulders towards the strike.

  3. Hand positioning: Keep one hand near your chin to protect your face while executing the uppercut with the other hand.

  4. Execution: Lift your arm from a downward motion and strike upward in an arch towards the opponent's chin or body.

  5. Power: Use power from your legs and hips to generate a strong uppercut.

  6. Recovery: After hitting the target, quickly return to your defensive position to shield yourself from the opponent's attacks.

Upperstance

Upperstance

When performing an upperstance (also called uppercut stance) in boxing, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  1. Positioning: Stand with your feet in a stable boxing position, with one foot in front of the other and knees slightly bent.

  2. Hand positioning: Keep one hand near your chin to protect your face while preparing to execute the uppercut with the other hand.

  3. Movement: Bend your knees and prepare by rotating your hip and shoulder towards the strike.

  4. Execution: Lift your arm from a downward motion and strike upward in an arch towards the opponent's chin or body.

  5. Power: Use power from your legs and hips to generate strength in the uppercut strike.

  6. Defense: Be aware of your defense and quickly return to your defensive position to protect yourself from any counterattacks from the opponent.

Hook
Basic punches in boxing

Hook

When performing a hook in boxing, it is important to consider the following:

  1. Positioning: Stand in a stable boxing stance with the body rotated towards the opponent.

  2. Hand positioning: Keep one hand near your chin to protect your face while preparing the hook with the other hand.

  3. Movement: Bend the knees and rotate the hips and shoulders towards the strike to generate power.

  4. Execution: Strike with the arm in a semi-circular motion towards the opponent's head or body.

  5. Power: Use power from the legs and body rotation to give the hook strength.

  6. Recovery: After executing the hook, quickly return to your defensive position to be prepared for the opponent's potential counterattacks.

By focusing on proper positioning, movement, and regularly training to improve your technique and precision with the hook in boxing, you will be able to execute the strike effectively and powerfully in match situations. It is also important to have good timing and read your opponent's movements to successfully land a hook.

Jabb
Basic punches in boxing

Jab

When executing a jab in boxing, it is important to consider the following:

  1. Positioning: Stand in a stable boxing stance with one foot in front of the other and knees slightly bent.

  2. Hand positioning: Keep one hand near your chin to protect your face while preparing the jab with the other hand.

  3. Movement: Extend the arm forward with quick and straight strikes towards the opponent's head or body.

  4. Execution: Perform the jab with quickness and precision, and quickly return to your defensive position.

  5. Timing: Use the jab to measure distance, control the pace of the match, and create openings for other strikes.

  6. Variation: Vary the speed and power of the jab to confuse the opponent and keep them on their toes.

By focusing on positioning, movement, timing, and variation, you can effectively use the jab to measure distance, control the pace of the match, and create openings for other strikes in boxing. It is also important to train regularly to improve your jab technique and be able to use it successfully in match situations.
