7 effective Yin Yoga poses

Are you looking for a deeper experience of relaxation and inner strength? Yin yoga may be the answer for you. This peaceful and meditative style of yoga focuses on stretching and strengthening the connective tissue in the body, while promoting calmness and balance in the mind.

Let Björn Borg guide you through a 30-minute yoga session with 7 effective yin yoga poses and experience how these yoga positions can help you relax and strengthen both body and soul.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is a quiet and meditative form of yoga that focuses on stretching and strengthening the connective tissue in the body. Yin yoga focuses on creating balance and flexibility in the body's connective tissue, ligaments and tendons rather than strengthening muscles.

Yin yoga has several benefits, including increased mobility, improved posture, reduced stress, better breathing, and increased awareness of the body and mind. This style of yoga is particularly suitable for those seeking a meditative and relaxed practice and who wish to complement more physically demanding styles of yoga.

Here are 4 characteristics when it comes to Yin Yoga:

  • Long held positions: During a yin yoga session, yoga positions are held for extended periods of time, usually 3-5 minutes or more. This gives the connective tissue time to stretch and release tension.

  • Soft positions: The positions in yin yoga are often soft and done with relaxed muscles. It's about letting the body's own weight and gravity do the work.

  • Relaxation and awareness: Yin yoga encourages relaxation and mindful presence. It is common to use breathing techniques and meditation during yin yoga sessions to deepen the experience.

  • Deep stretch: The positions often target the hips, back and groin, where connective tissue and joints are most likely to stiffen and tighten. This can help increase mobility and reduce tension in these areas. A perfect session to do after a long day at work, for example.

Seated Forward Bend (Caterpillar)

  • Sit with your legs straight in front of you.

  • Lean forward from the hips and aim to reach your toes.

  • Hold the position for 3-5 minutes.

  • Sit with the soles of your feet together and your knees out.

  • Lean gently over your legs with your back straight.

  • Benefits: Opens the hips and inner groins, promotes deep relaxation.

Dragon Pose

  • Get into a low lunge position with one knee bent and the other leg extended back.

  • Lean forward at the hip and hold the position for 3-5 minutes per side.

Yin Squat (Malasana Variation)

  • Begin in a deep squat position with your feet wider than hip-width apart.

  • Place your elbows on the inside of your knees and gently push them outward.

  • Hold the position for 3-5 minutes.

Warrior II Pose (Virabhadrasana II)

  • Stand with one leg in front and the other behind, parallel to the ground.

  • Stretch your arms out at shoulder height, with your gaze directed forward.

  • Hold the position for 3-5 minutes per side.

  • Benefits: Opens the hips, strengthens the legs and improves balance.

Sphinx Pose

  • Lie on your stomach with your elbows directly under your shoulders.

  • Lift your upper body upwards and bend your back gently.

  • Hold the position for 3-5 minutes.

  • Benefits: Stretches the back, opens the heart and strengthens the spine.

Child's Pose (Extended)

  • Kneel with your toes together and your knees apart.

  • Stretch your arms forward and lean your upper body towards the ground.

  • Hold the position for 3-5 minutes.

  • Benefits: Stretches the back, opens the hips and promotes relaxation.

Remember: It is important to adapt yin yoga and any other type of yoga to your own body and level. Many positions can be modified to suit different needs and limitations. Listen to your body and have a relaxed moment on the mat.
